 What is microbiota?

In the inner and outer parts of the human body, the surface, cavities and tissues are covered with microorganisms. The term microbiota is the general name given to the microorganism communities that make up this normal flora.

It consists of communities of commensal, symbiotic and pathogenic bacteria, viruses, archaea, and eukaryotic organisms. These microorganism communities do not normally cause disease in normal healthy people and maintain their vitality in balance. Normal flora is also one of our body's natural resistance mechanisms. normal flora; It is in a state of variability determined by various factors such as age, nutrition, hormonal status, health, personal hygiene. This microbial population continues to change throughout human life.

Most infections in humans are typically caused by microorganisms that are members of the normal microbial flora of patients; While these organisms do not normally cause disease where they are, they can cause disease if they enter areas such as blood and sterile tissues. At the same time, as a result of the decrease or increase in the number of microorganisms in balance, various disorders occur as a result of the deterioration of the balance between microorganisms. This change in the microbiota is called dysbiosis. Dysbiosis in the intestinal microbiota can have consequences such as allergies, type 2 diabetes, CNS diseases, GIS diseases, and autoimmune diseases. Factors that can cause dysbiosis in the intestinal microbiota; trans fats, processed and refined products, cigarettes, alcohol, western-style high animal protein and fatty diet, and especially antibiotics and chemotherapy drugs.

The use of probiotics and prebiotics, which has become a popular study topic in recent years, is recommended for the treatment of gastrointestinal system dysbiosis or for the health of intestinal flora other than dysbiosis. Live microorganisms, which are present in certain numbers in the digestive system and have beneficial effects on the host, are called probiotics. The term probiotic is a Greek word meaning 'for life'. Prebiotics, on the other hand, are nutrients that pass directly into the large intestine without being digested in the small intestine and improve the health of the host by positively affecting the proliferation and activity of bacteria in the intestine. Although probiotics and prebiotics can be taken with various foods, they can also be supplied in capsule form preparations.
