 Nightmare of Last Months Mucilage

Istanbul Gelisim University Laboratory Technology Department Dr. Instructor Member Secil Kirlangic Atasen gave information about “Mucilage and its purification”, which has become a nightmare in recent months. With the deterioration of the ecological balance, the problem of mucilage, which has been the nightmare of the last months, has emerged, he said.

The wastewater that has increased as a result of rapid population growth and industrialization has become unmanageable by nature. With the deterioration of the ecological balance, the problem of mucilage, which has been the nightmare of the last months, has emerged. The treatment of wastewater is essential in order to prevent further deterioration of the ecological balance of nature.

Firstly; Let's answer the question of what is the "Mucilage" known as "Sea Saliva" that has covered the Sea of Marmara in recent months. Mucilage is a sticky slimy substance produced by almost all plants and some microorganisms. The mucilage layer, which threatens life in the sea, shows the level of pollution in the Sea of Marmara. Mucilage forms a layer on the sea surface, disconnecting the seawater from the atmosphere and causing a decrease in oxygen. This situation threatens the life of sea creatures. The increase in nitrogen and phosphorus in the sea together with the sea water temperature is among the most important factors affecting the formation of the mucilage layer. In the last 40 years, the temperature of the Sea of Marmara has increased by 2.5 degrees. The Marmara Sea, located between the Aegean and the Black Sea, is already suitable for mucilage formation, and the expected result has been encountered when urban wastes are also activated. Due to its organic structure, the presence of mucilage negatively affects the consumption of seafood. Fisheries, tourism are the sectors most affected by mucilage, and experts warn people to be careful when handling mucilage.

In order for the mucilage to disappear, it is necessary to go down to its source. We can get rid of this nightmare by completely eliminating the wastes biologically and reducing the amount of nitrogen and phosphorus in the sea. Wastewaters should be diversified according to their sources and treatment methods should be determined according to these sources. More than 99% of wastewater is water, the rest is made up of pollutants. Biological treatment also plays a very important role at this point. Contaminants may be dissolved in water or as suspended solids. The most effective method for the removal of organic pollutants is the "biological treatment" method. biological treatment; It is the breakdown or precipitation of dissolved or suspended organic substances in wastewater by bacteria or the conversion of these substances into inorganic substances. With this purification, the reactions in nature are accelerated and the purification is carried out in a shorter time and in a safer way.

Before it is too late, the Marmara Sea can be saved by taking measures regarding the mucilage problem. All responsible people should act together for a clean world. With the wish to appreciate the beauty that nature offers us...
