Happiness Must Have Something To Do With Chemistry!

Istanbul Gelisim University Laboratory Technology Department Lecturer Dr. Secil Kirlangic Atasen gave some information on the relationship between hormones and happiness. Happiness is created in our bodies through chemical events. The scarcity, absence or abundance of chemicals is directly related to whether we are happy or unhappy.

Atasen gave some information on the relationship between chemistry and happiness. "Happiness is created in our bodies by chemical events. The scarcity, absence or abundance of chemicals is directly related to whether we are happy or unhappy. Although the days we go through and the difficulties we experience prevent us from being happy, being happy is not as difficult as it seems. Studies show that our hormones, which will make us happy, are actually secreted quite easily. Even a piece of chocolate can be enough for this," he said.
So how do these hormones work?
Atasen said, "First of all, it is necessary to talk about a chemical called neurotransmitter that provides the connection between nerve cells in our brain. Thanks to this connection, billions of brain cells communicate with each other. An increase or decrease in neurotransmitter causes our body to react differently. The most important neurotransmitters are dopamine, serotonin and endorphins.
Atasen "Dopamine, the "reward molecule", is one of the hormones that make the body feel reward and motivation. The things we enjoy doing increase the amount of dopamine in our body. In order to increase the amount of dopamine in our body, we should consume foods containing high amounts of protein, exercise frequently, get enough sleep and benefit from sunlight as much as possible. Dopamine deficiency causes muscle spasms, sleep disorders, and eating and drinking difficulties. Our second hormone is serotonin, the "happiness molecule". In cases where the serotonin hormone is not secreted in sufficient amounts, various mental problems occur, especially depression and anxiety. To increase the amount of serotonin, animal foods, especially eggs and cheese, should be consumed. In addition, fruits such as banana, pineapple and chocolate help increase the amount of serotonin in our body. Our third hormone is endorphin, the "pain-killing molecule". Although the hormone endorphin is not exactly a neurotransmitter, it is one of the important hormones that will make us feel happy together with dopamine and serotonin. When our body encounters stress, fear or pain, our body releases endorphins to respond to these feelings, so our body tries to stay strong in the face of these emotions. Exercising for 30 minutes increases the secretion of endorphin hormone 5 times. In addition, consuming fruits such as bananas, strawberries, grapes and oranges also play an important role in the secretion of endorphins.
Atasen said, "Chocolate, which has an important place in our lives, contains a molecule called phenethylamine (PEA), which stimulates the nervous system. Consuming chocolate makes people feel good by increasing the level of serotonin, and it also helps us to be happy by releasing endorphins. In summary, being happy is actually a good feeling that the science of chemistry offers us. The more balanced we eat and the more we live away from stress, the closer we will be to happiness. He said ‘’I wish you happy days".
