Environmentally friendly discipline of chemistry "Green Chemistry"

Istanbul Gelisim University Laboratory Technology Department Dr. Instructor Prof. Seçil Kırlangıç Ataşen gave some information about “Green Chemistry”, one of the youngest disciplines of chemistry. Green Chemistry is very important for a livable world with its environmentally friendly processes.

Green chemistry, one of the new application areas of chemistry, is an important issue for humanity. Scientists; It provides solutions to universal problems such as climatic changes, agricultural problems, and the reduction of natural resources, by not producing or using dangerous chemicals, and by using materials other than dangerous chemicals. That's why green chemistry is so important for sustainability. Human health and environmental issues are so essential that they cannot be ignored by chemists.
With the increase in the world population day by day, issues such as food, shelter and energy that people need have become more important, and it is now important how much is produced as well as how much is produced on the way to which more production is started in a shorter time. At this point, "Green Chemistry", which is a very new concept, has a history of about 30 years. While green chemistry increases the quality of life of people, it offers a chemistry that respects nature, is based on recycling, and where energy-friendly features come to the fore.
One of the most important outputs of green chemistry is sustainability. The use of secondary resources in production and the efficient use of energy are the two most important components of sustainability. We can show aluminum production as an example. Aluminum metal is one of the most demanded metals due to its low density, easy shaping and recycling to a large extent. As it is known, aluminum metal is found in nature in the form of oxide compounds. The production of aluminum from these ores is an energy-intensive process. Therefore, the production of aluminum from secondary sources such as scrap provides 90% energy savings compared to production from ore.
Another example is plastic. The excessive use of plastic materials, which finds its place in a wide area from shopping bags to kitchen utensils, from electronics to the automotive industry, is dragging our world towards a major environmental disaster. Recycling plastics from secondary sources within the scope of sustainability or using easily degradable materials instead of plastic materials reminds us once again how important green chemistry is for our world.
In summary; Green chemistry is indispensable for a sustainable world because it produces atomic and molecular solutions to environmental problems. Universities and industries should act jointly to spread the green chemistry discipline. The environmental benefit of green chemistry is practically revealed by the application of the rules. Therefore, this discipline should be included in the course contents of higher education institutions and students' awareness of the subject should be increased.
