Deterioration of nerve functions in the legs and feet, pain, burning sensation and decreased sense of touch can be seen in individuals with diabetes. Individuals with diabetes should pay particular attention to the formation of calluses on the feet, fungal skin problems, nail deformities, woody appearance in the nails, and water collection between and under the fingers. Calluses can cause ulcers on the skin and acid-containing tapes and solutions used for calluses can worsen the picture. The use of pumice stones and rasps after bathing can also cause additional problems in individuals with diabetes. For the reasons mentioned, individuals with diabetes should definitely see a specialist for foot care and have regular check-ups.
Things to do in diabetic foot care:
1) Feet should be washed daily with warm water and dried with a soft towel, including between the toes.
2) Moisturizing should be done with diabetic foot creams.
3) Feet should be checked for cracks and wounds at regular intervals.
4) The shoes, slippers and socks used by the individual should not be too tight or loose.
5) If there is callus formation, it should be taken care of by experts.
6) Toenails need to be trimmed straight.
7) In the selection of shoes, comfortable, leather-soled, soft and seamless models should be preferred.
