 Orthotics and Foot Ergonomics


Istanbul Gelisim University Vocational School of Health Services Lecturer Merve Yılmaz gave information about Orthotics and Foot Ergonomics.


Lecturer Yılmaz, The human foot is the foundation of the whole body and is the basic connection between the body and the ground while standing and walking. However, little attention is paid to proper ergonomics and its relationship to the human feet, which bear most of the burden of our daily working lives.
In his words, “Ergonomics claims that a "neutral posture" of the foot is necessary to minimize overuse injuries. An incompatible shoe can change the neutral alignment of the foot, resulting in loss of stability and strength and potential injury. See. Merve Yılmaz stated that, for example, wearing high heels for long hours, carrying heavy objects and working on wet and slippery surfaces are just a few of the dangers that the feet are exposed to at work.
Orthotic interventions are widely used to treat existing pathological conditions and prevent overuse injuries, and may also have indirect effects on lower extremity loading by influencing changes in gait kinematics and spatio-temporal parameters. There is limited literature outlining and reviewing the effects of various orthotic interventions and the impact of shoe design considerations on ergonomics of the lower extremity and foot.
Drawing attention to the work done by Luximon et al. in 2014, Lect. See. Karaağaç said that they concluded that the use of metatarsal pads has an effect on the plantar pressures of the foot, especially when used with high-heeled shoes. He explained that this is due to the transfer of plantar pressure to other parts, such as the longitudinal back and heel section, so they recommend the use of metatarsal pads when wearing high-heeled shoes.

Based on this information, individuals who spend a lot of time standing in daily life and who use high heels; We can conclude that it would be beneficial to use orthotic approaches such as metatarsal pads and orthopedic sole supports in order to minimize foot injuries and increase ergonomics and comfort.
