Orthopedic Prosthetics And Orthotics

Hallux Valgus Deformity and Orthotics Approach

İstanbul Gelişim University Vocational School of Health Services Lecturer Şabo KESLER gave information about hallux valgus deformity and treatment approaches.

Hallux valgus or big toe protrusion is a foot deformity that occurs when the big toe turns inward and the comb bone in the first toe turns outward. Pressure disorder can be seen in people with hallux valgus deformity. There is a high probability of painful calluses development on the soles of the feet as a result of pressure disorder. This protruding condition and pain in the thumb makes it difficult for patients to wear shoes and walk, affecting life negatively.

Hallux valgus is a deformity that includes multiple problems such as enlargement in the medial of the distal end of the metatarsal bone, Morton's neuroma, bunion, hammer toe deformity with degenerative changes occurring in the first metatarsophalangeal joint. Deformity, pain, redness and restlessness in the toes are among the main symptoms seen in hallux valgus deformity. It is generally a genetically transmitted health problem between family members. However, wearing inappropriate (especially narrow and high-heeled) shoes plays a role in the development of the deformity. However, despite wearing comfortable shoes with wide low heels, there is a possibility of deformity. Hallux valgus deformity can be seen in everyone. It is more common in women who live in cities and wear pointy-toed and high-heeled shoes.

Stating that there are different treatment approaches for hallux valgus deformity, Lecturer. See. Şabo KESLER stated that the most frequently and first recommended approach is reels. However, he added that the corrective forces of these rollers placed between the first and second toes are likely to be insufficient, so it would be healthier to fix the rollers to the insole. He stated that the orthoses or shoes used do not correct the deformity, but are effective in its progression and relieving the discomfort, and that it is extremely important to inform the patients about this issue. He stated that shoes with a wide toe box, orthotic approaches that support the medial longitudinal arch and prevent the calcaneus from going to the valgus can be used to stop the progression of the deformity. He stated that hallux valgus rest splints are also among the treatment approaches, but they are not preferred because they cannot be used in shoes. He stated that if there is no decrease in pain and improvement in function after the orthoses used, the patients should be reviewed in terms of surgery. Stating that the use of bunions for the smoothness of the alignment and the use of dynamic orthoses to restore the range of motion in the post-surgery period is necessary, Lecturer. See. Şabo KESLER also stated that early diagnosis is the most important step in preventing the progression of the deformity.
Hallux valgus deformity is a common deformity in the society, which occurs as a result of the use of incorrect shoes, apart from the effect of genetic factors. Based on the foregoing, we can say that it is possible to reduce the incidence of deformity and prevent its progression by raising awareness of the society on this issue, conducting screenings for early diagnosis, and orthoses in the early period.
