Oral And Dental Health

Are Your Teeth Ready for Winter?

Istanbul Gelisim University Vocational School of Health Services Oral and Dental Health Program Head Lecturer Sibel CANİTEZ said, "We all know that cold drinks consumed to cool off in the summer cause tooth sensitivity.

The air we breathe, the hot and cold foods consumed cause many oral and dental diseases. However, unfortunately, enough attention is not given to dental diseases, which are not thought to threaten our lives directly.

Conditions such as cavities, sensitivities, gingival recessions and gingival bleeding symptoms in the mouth increase gingival ache with breathing in cold weather. Again, bacteria and microbes that enter the mouth with cough, flu, cold and other infections experienced in the winter months bring along tooth and gum problems. Of course, it is in our hands to enjoy this beautiful season more comfortably. By taking certain preventive measures, we can avoid all these problems and breathe a sigh of relief.
So how should we protect our oral and dental health and what should we pay attention to? We have said that in the winter months, when both breathing air and cold and hot foods are consumed, this can cause sensitivity and pain in the teeth. Therefore, in winter, we should prefer to breathe through the nose rather than mouth breathing in the outdoor environment. Because when the mouth is closed, the lips, cheeks and tongue protect the teeth from the cold.

Again, as in all seasons, you should definitely visit your dentist in certain periods during the winter months. A regular visit to the dentist is extremely important for both prevention and early treatment against the progression of the disease. In order to prevent common tooth sensitivity, we need to change the way we brush our teeth. We should never neglect to protect our neck and face, especially when leaving the house. This process not only keeps our face and neck warm, but also protects our teeth and gums. In addition, in order to alleviate your tooth sensitivity, it is necessary to brush our teeth with a toothpaste specially produced for sensitive teeth and a toothbrush with soft bristles. Using dental floss after brushing is also very important for the health of your gums and teeth.
We should never forget that the use of antibacterial mouthwash in these cold months can help prevent gum infection or other gum problems, as winter diseases that we all know can also cause gum infection or gingivitis. In addition, we should definitely change our toothbrush after upper respiratory tract infections. And drinking enough water. Water is extremely important for dental health. Water consumption decreases in cold months. In this case, it reduces the secretion of saliva. One of the tasks of saliva is to clean the food stuck between our teeth and fight against bacteria that cause infection. For this reason, having less saliva in our mouth creates an ideal environment for bacteria to grow.

The last step of oral care is brushing the tongue. Studies show that the bacteria that cause bad breath are found in the tongue. For this, brushing the tongue is very important.

Happy days when we will protect our precious smile.
