 Importance of Optical Centering

Istanbul Gelisim University Vocational School of Health Services Lecturer Bilgen Şimşek gave information about the importance of optical centering.

If the glasses prescribed by physicians for the correction of refractive errors are not correctly centered by the optician, it will not provide the desired visual quality and will bring various complications.

In prescription eyeglass lenses, the optical center is the point on the lens where the highest quality image is obtained, allowing the light rays to pass through without refraction. Identifying this point with high image quality and aligning it with the patient's pupil center indicates the correct application. It is essential that the optician determines the focal points of the patient according to the selected frame prior to glass assembly.

The patient's view from the center creates a prismatic effect at different strengths depending on the distance from the center and the dioptric value. The effect of prismatic glasses used in the treatment of strabismus causes the image to move upwards, downwards, nasally or peripherally. In this case, the eye without strabismus is forced to have a squint look.

Adults can often notice the anomaly in the image. However, the same is not the case for children. I recommend that parents be more conscious and sensitive, especially in children's glasses.
