Don't Stress, Destroy Immune Soldiers
Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU) Health Services Vocational School (SHMYO) Lecturer Sibel Haklı said, “Controlled stress keeps people alive. Excess of it will collapse the immune system,” she said.
She stated that Covid-19, which has taken the world under its influence, has become the only agenda of all people. She is right, "Covid-19, which has the feature of being a global milestone today, has shown a global and rapid spread since the first case report, has affected life in basic indicators and details and started to change it. The change based on the epidemic affects the way of thinking and living. Economy, education, administrative All of life, including political, military institutions and systems, work, transportation and consumption, communication changes due to perceptions. In this epidemic process, where many uncertain situations are experienced, individuals experience intense stress. It can increase the negative effects of 19. In the Covid-19 epidemic, where human life is under threat, people are deeply affected not only physiologically but also psychologically and socially."Instructor See. Sibel Haklı continued her explanation as follows:"Stress is defined as the organism's response to any change that puts pressure on the organism (Selye, 1973). Lazarus and Folkman (1984) consider stress as the individual's interpretation of the state of danger that arises due to interaction with the environment. Stress is a short-term, acute form of stress. and chronic long-term. Short-term stress makes the organism ready for danger and becomes protective. On the other hand, chronic stress causes many diseases, reduces the function of immune protective cells and plays a suppressive role on the immune system.
Lect. Sibel Haklı drew attention to the fact that in this epidemic where many uncertainties are experienced, in some individuals, the brain secretes more stress hormones, and excessive stress negatively affects the immune system. All studies show that the ability of the virus to infect and cause disease increases when the immune system is suppressed. This means that you become more susceptible to the virus without realizing it, rather than fighting the virus. The body can only buffer even a momentary stress in a few hours. When anxiety cannot be controlled, a chronic high stress picture emerges. Stress causes more production of the stress hormone called cortisol. In fact, when cortisol is secreted in small amounts, it is good for immunity by preventing inflammation, but when it is constantly released due to stress, our body gets used to having too much cortisol in the blood and starts to do harm. Moreover, excess cortisol is very harmful for the brain as it is for many organs; high levels of cortisol can wear down the brain, impairing its ability to function properly. It can disrupt the regulation of connections (synapses) between nerve cells (neurons), which can cause asociality and a decrease in social interactions in people. Chronic stress has a depressing effect on the cortex, the area of the brain responsible for memory and learning. This can reduce learning ability. These conditions also cause increased vascular resistance, disruption of gastrointestinal secretions, stress on skin integrity and dermatitis, resulting in a chain of problems leading to suppression of the immune system. People who have been in the "fight or flight" mentality for a long time due to stress are now depleted of energy resources, so their immune system collapses and some diseases that the person is predisposed to occur."Infectious diseases caused by viruses are an important public health problem that has been known since ancient times and has been affecting people. Covid-19 is part of a large family of viruses that cause disease in humans and animals. The disease caused by Covid-19, high fever, cough, headache It shows symptoms of pain, weakness, sore throat, diarrhea and is defined with high morbidity and mortality rates. As a result of these epidemics, deterioration of health, job loss, education problems, increase in hospital admissions and death can be observed. It increases the behavior of keeping distance. Isolation measures and quarantine taken to avoid the disease or prevent the transmission of the disease cause people to feel fear, to live hopelessly and alone. on the other hand, 1/3 of individuals have low mood. drowsiness, rarely psychosis, and less frequently dementia have been reported. Fear of death, loneliness, helplessness and stigmatization in individuals with the disease cause them to experience. In the global statements, cases such as increasing violence and divorces for the family, intolerance, hatred, and the rise of self-centered approaches are seen. People whose psychology was damaged due to the epidemic and those who were adversely affected by the epidemic constitute a very large mass. However, in this epidemic, individuals who constantly show strong protective behavior, establish a high balance of fear and hope, and become open to new thoughts, perceptions and lifestyles, live with less damage and stronger immunity without complaining about this new epidemic situation."In order for individuals who have the fear of catching corona to control this anxiety and stress, it is important to do mental and physical exercise, to acquire meaningful hobbies, to work, to obtain new information, to be informed about Covid-19. To be able to come out of the process with a positive "earned change" and to be able to manage a profitable process. For this, it is necessary to keep the level of awareness high, to learn scientific lessons from the cases, to have a healthy diet, sleep pattern, positive thinking, "There is stress, no panic" approach and controlled anxiety. It is necessary to take scientific measures, to be protected and to be able to control our stress before it reaches chronic stress. It should not be forgotten that normal life will make life strong, safe and healthy.
