 COVID-19 and Distance Learning

Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU) Health Services Vocational School (SHMYO) Lecturer Sibel Haklı stated that although it is not a substitute for face-to-face learning, there are also advantages that distance education can provide and gave some advice to students about this.

The Novel Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) is a disease caused by a virus that was first identified on January 13, 2020, as a result of research conducted in a group of patients who developed respiratory symptoms (fever, cough, shortness of breath) in Wuhan Province, China, in late December. . After touching respiratory particles and contaminated surfaces of the patients, the virus can be taken by taking the hands to the face, eyes, nose or mouth without washing them.

Lecturer Sibel Haklı stated that Istanbul Gelisim University has switched from face-to-face classes to online classes as of March 2020, with a similar method followed by other universities in order to reduce transmission and protect health. Although there is a generation that is more at peace with technology, it may be difficult to continue education from home in this process.

Student's attention; It can be easily distracted by a variety of factors such as family members, food, pets, television, and social media. It may not be possible to feel motivated or productive as you struggle with your COVID-19 concerns. Homeschooling and staying focused can be challenging for students.

Right, although it is not a substitute for face-to-face learning, there are also some advantages that distance education can provide, and he pointed out that this process can be easily adapted. It is also possible to turn this disadvantageous situation into an advantage, with a flexible study environment, in a way that the student can make more progress in the course subjects that he knows himself to be lacking. Regularly following virtual lessons, studying from other educational resources and reading books will also increase the feeling of control and control. Developing the ability to adapt to the new learning environment, albeit temporarily, will also support the student's psychological well-being. Here are some small tips for students to continue their academic development and to prevent the accumulation of course topics and prevent them from becoming more challenging:

* An order can be created as if you are going from home to class. By planning the day, a time can be set to wake up, have breakfast, and get dressed. The program should be adjusted so that it can focus on a small number of specific things at a time.
*Establishing a physical boundary between the work area and the relaxation area can support focus while studying from home. You can get support from your family members for this.
*Following the lessons live will also help you plan the time. At this point, it is very important that you, our students, keep their motivation high and show motivation by having self-discipline. We can also consider this situation as a 'demo' of being able to display the responsibility that adult life requires.
* Care should be taken to follow the lessons regularly with active participation during live lesson hours. With active participation, there will also be an opportunity to ask and clarify areas that are not understood, to receive instant feedback and to follow in-class discussions on the subject during the live lesson. In addition, expressing thoughts by asking or writing in a virtual environment may be more comfortable than sharing them face-to-face in a classroom environment.
* It is important to put your phone aside, turn off notifications from messages and social media, not engage in virtual games, and not be busy with other things to avoid distractions during live class hours. Taking notes during live lessons can help direct attention to the lesson.
*Lessons to be studied or homework to be completed can be divided into small tasks that can be completed each day. Breaking a large task down into smaller chunks can make things easier to deal with and help be more motivated to get them done.
*Making a plan for socializing during the day can increase focus on work. Hours of the day that are found to be less productive can be set to spend time with family members, or to meet friends by phone or video chat. Time should also be allocated for activities that feel good, while not neglecting social isolation.
*When the documents and videos required for the lessons are added to the system, how long or how many times they will be repeated depends on the student's personal preferences and time management.
Try to get as much benefit as possible from distance education during this unusually demanding process, using relevant tips.

We know that our students will be motivated to provide the highest benefit by taking care to protect themselves and their loved ones first, and by turning this new distance learning environment into a fun form. Healthy days..
