  Human Papilloma Virus

Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU), Health Services Vocational School (SHMYO), Head of Medical Laboratory Techniques Program Dr. Instructor Member Arzu Özgen gave information about the Human Papilloma Virus.

Emphasizing that the human papilloma virus, or HPV for short, is a sexually transmitted virus, it is one of the most common infections. Instructor Member Özgen said, "This virus is a DNA virus and has more than 200 subtypes. Some types of HPV virus cause benign clinical pictures such as genital warts or warts on body parts other than the genital area, while some types are found in the cervix, anal region, female and can cause cancers in the male genitals and mouth and pharynx.

"The most common types of HPV that cause genital warts are Type 6 and Type 11. If it becomes permanent in the body, it can cause cancer after many years. Therefore, preventive measures are very important. The first of these measures is the HPV vaccine. This vaccine is a recombinant non-viable vaccine developed against the virus subtypes that cause cancers and warts. This is the most suitable vaccine. age range is 9-12 years, but anyone between the ages of 9-26 can get this vaccine. There is no HPV screening before vaccination and it is recommended to apply this vaccine to both girls and boys. Another method of protection is to use latex condoms during sexual intercourse and to have a single sexual partner Another method is regular gynecological examination. In our country, the Ministry of Health carries out the cervical cancer screening program.According to this program, 30-65 Women between the ages of 18 and 18 are screened with Pap-smear test and HPV test every 5 years. Screening should be started after the age of 21, because studies have shown that most HPV infections at a young age go away on their own.

HPV INFECTION IS VERY COMMON

I can not say that it is possible to be protected from the virus to a large extent, although not one hundred percent, with vaccines and the right protection methods. Instructor Member Özgen said, "Cervical cancer screening is very important in terms of providing early diagnosis and treatment. I wish you to give importance to health screenings in order to be healthy."
