All over the world, September 21 has been recognized as "World Alzheimer's Day". According to the data of the World Health Organization, it is known that nearly 50 million people in the world are diagnosed with dementia. There are approximately 700,000 Alzheimer's patients in our country. Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia among the elderly. It is estimated that 6.2 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease in 2021. It is seen that the death rate of Alzheimer's patients increased by 33% from 1999 to 2019. Alzheimer's disease is the fifth leading cause of death for adults 65 years and older and the sixth leading cause of death for all adults. Alzheimer's disease involves parts of the brain that control thought, memory, and language, and over time can severely affect a person's ability to perform daily activities. While the cause is still unknown, scientists are doing more research every day on Alzheimer's disease, what can be done to reduce the risk and manage this deadly disease. Alzheimer's disease is not a normal process of aging. Symptoms usually begin after age 60, but Alzheimer's disease appears ten years or more before problems first appear. Risk factors include aging, diabetes, high blood pressure (hypertension), smoking, and a family history of dementia.
Awareness of Alzheimer's disease, which will constitute one of the biggest public health problems of the future, should be increased.
