 Temporomandibular Joint Disorders Treatment

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, which are seen in many parts of the society today, can have many causes. These usually start to show symptoms after years due to the accumulation of stresses experienced in daily life. These disorders affect people's quality of life extremely negatively. If these ailments are not treated at an early stage, they can turn into an irreversible and permanent disease. There are many methods for the treatment of TMJ disorders. information method, physical therapy methods, pharmacological treatment, psychiatric support treatment and occlusal splint treatments; Irreversible treatments include occlusal adjustment and surgical interventions. As a basic principle in the treatment of these diseases, reversible treatments should be applied primarily according to the type of the disease. Among the reversible treatments, occlusal splint application is the most used method. Splints used in dentistry; stabilization splint, anterior bite plate, anterior reposition splint, posterior bite plate, pivoting and soft splints. TMJ anatomy and physiology should be well known in order to decide which splint should be used in which patient.
 
Splint indications are stated as TMJ inflammation, intra-articular irregularity, post-surgical treatment, hypertonic facial muscles, teeth clenching and grinding. Early treatment will increase the likelihood of success in the recovery of all these symptoms.
